Believe it or not, your Honda and Yamaha scoots do have a small transmission. It's hidden away in a small area near the rear wheel. Don't forget about the tranny oil! There is only about 200cc of oil here - a very small amount. Most scooters use standard high quality engine oil and some take gear oil. If your scooter takes engine oil, it should be changed fairly frequently. The gears put a lot of shear stress on the oil, reducing its effectiveness over time. It is definitely a pain to change this oil and add the new oil, but it must be done. If not, the oil will eventually turn to a thick dark, molasses like stuff. Your bearings and gears will be very unhappy, and they will eventually fail. I once bought a Elite 150 from a nice lady who didn't change the tranny oil. The tranny on this scooter sounded horrible when it was ridden. She was lucky it had not locked up the rear wheel when she was riding, which would have probably caused a big crash. I bought it for $20 because she didn't want to have the tranny fixed. When I took the transmission apart, it was really in bad shape. Several gears and a few of the bearings were destroyed. I got it going again, but the cost of labor and parts was over $200. All because $0.25 of oil had not been changed...

My idle is too high. This could be due to a throttle cable that is too tight or misrouted. It could also mean you need to turn the idle screw on the carb counterclockwise ~1/4 turn. A high idle may be due to a vacuum leak. The rubber manifold between the carb and the cylinder head can crack over time. Try starting the engine and squirting some water around the carb, manifold, and vacuum hoses. If the idle decreases, you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

I have trouble getting my scooter on its centerstand. Like a lot of other things, there is a technique to this. Even a small person can put a large motorcycle on the centerstand with the proper technique. Here's what I do: Hold the scooter with your left hand on the left grip. Put your right (or left foot) on the centerstand to hold it down. Put your right hand under the seat area, where there should be a railing or a grip. This is the place where you'll lift the scooter a bit. Now in one motion, push down with your foot while you tug back with your left hand and up lift up with your right hand. If you do all of these movements at the same time with the proper motion, you'll have zero problems.

One of the key issues when looking for a mobility scooter is the range or distance that you will be able to use scooter before the need to recharge. The range is generally given by the manufacture in miles e.g. up to 10 miles. If you are buying the mobility scooter to make a specific journey e.g. from your home to a local town, you must ensure that the scooter you purchase has an adequate range to complete the journey.

We often receive feedback on our blogs and forums from customers who have purchased scooters which were not suitable for there intended regular journey in terms of range and ride quality. This is generally the case when a decision has been made purely on price. For example if you intend to complete long journeys, a small 3 wheel portable scooter may simply not be up to the job in terms of providing a comfortable ride and sufficient range. In this case a larger (and more expensive) 4 wheel, 4mph rated machine may be a better prospect. Ride quality is especially important should you suffer from a medical condition such as back pain or arthritis.

When taking delivery of a new scooter it is essential to test the range of the scooter by building up steadily before submitting the scooter to its full range. This will avoid getting stranded with a mobility scooter with no charge, which can cause major issues as a scooter is very difficult to move once discharged.

Take the scooter out on small trips and gain confidence in the scooters range and you own abilities before embarking on a long trip. This process will help you check the scooter is performing correctly after its first charging cycle. This process is especially important if the machine is 2nd hand as the actual range may be well below the manufactures rating as batteries can become less efficient as they get older.

What's With All The Voltage?

Every day, customers either come in the store or call and ask about this scooter and that scooter. I ask everyone the same thing. What are you planning on using your scooter for? Some as transportation to work or school and more than most, the scooter is for their kids. But what scooter should you buy and what�s the big deal about voltage?

Electric scooters over the years have evolved tremendously. One thing that voltage plays a major role in is output power. The more voltage, the more output power that is available; but that is not the sole factor that determines power and that is not the only role that voltage plays in your electric scooters.

Lets start with the traditional 12 volt system. Now-a-days, the small kids electric scooters are single twelve volt systems. As you increase in wattage, that is how many watts of power that is generated by your electric scooter engine, the more juice that is required to power that engine more efficiently.

With the interest in faster electric scooters, the 24 volt system was introduced. The 24 volt system is traditionally a trickle-charge system where two 12 volt batteries are simultaneously connected and then the whole system runs the engine, as well as any other add-ons that you have on your electric powered scooter. If your scooter has the traditional headlight, brake light, turn signals and the such, then your battery setup is more than likely a trickle-charge system and these extra add-ons along with the motor require more juice than a simple 12 volt system would be able to support.

The traditional electric powered scooter that has all the extras will be either a 24 volt system or for the heavy duty and longer lasting electric scooters, you will get a much better setup with a 36 volt system.

The higher voltage systems provide more power to carry more weight farther. With a 24 v0lt system, your average electric powered scooter can travel for about ten to fifteen miles; if you�re lucky. The 36 volt systems have reached a maximum of twenty-five to even thirty miles on a single charge. There are some 48 volt systems out there that can travel up to thirty-five miles on a single charge, by those are few.

Simple comparison: Take a 24 volt 500 watt electric powered scooter and put a two-hundred pound rider on it and it will go an average of 12-18 miles, depending on the scooter. Take a 36 volt 500 watt electric powered scooter and put the same two-hundred pound rider on it and it will go an average of 16-24 miles on a single charge.

As you can see, voltage does make a difference when you are talking about the actual distance and the distance that your electric scooter will take you before needing more juice.

Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression in order to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the scooter engine is warm. However, that's hard to do if your scooter is not running. So, just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gauge stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression, then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

Disconnect the fuel line and drain the old gas. Add fresh fuel and make sure it flows smoothly through the petcock (on the bottom of the fuel tank). If the petcock is controlled by vacuum, you'll have to draw a vacuum on the vacuum line in order for fuel to flow. The vacuum line will be the smaller line on the petcock. Do you get a good, steady flow of gas? If so, good. If not, you will have to remove the petcock and clean it. The gas flow should stop when you release the vacuum.

First, remove all of the rubber and gaskets or they will get damaged. After a 20 minute soaking in carb dip, I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar or a piano string, a strand of copper electrical wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're diligent.

My idle is too high. This could be due to a throttle cable that is too tight or misrouted. It could also mean you need to turn the idle screw on the carb counterclockwise ~1/4 turn. A high idle may be due to a vacuum leak. The rubber manifold between the carb and the cylinder head can crack over time. Try starting the engine and squirting some water around the carb, manifold, and vacuum hoses. If the idle decreases, you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Assuming you have sufficient compression, try to squirt in a bit of starting fluid and then see if your scooter will start. If so, that's great! That means that you have sufficient compression and the proper spark. You should get the scooter to run for a second or so on starting fluid. If so, there's a good chance you can keep it running. One caution here - do not run your engine for very long on starting fluid because it's hard on the scooter engine.

First remove all rubber and gaskets or they will be damaged. After a ~20 minute soaking I blow out the carb with compressed air. You have to get all the jets and the passageways clean. Be sure the jets are clear, especially the starter jet. Sometimes carb cleaner won't clear out these tiny jets. Use a guitar/piano wire, a strand of copper electircal wire, or a tiny drill bit pin vise. Be sure not to increase the size of the hole in the starter jet or you'll change the tuning. Carefully reassemble everything, checking for cracks in the rubber carb boots and the gaskets. Replace them if they are old and cracked. Be sure and remove all rubber and gasket material first or they could get ruined. Spray carb cleaner also works if you're dilligent.

Scooters are an incredibly fun board to ride. You can ride them on the street or on ramps. You can do some awesome tricks, and ride them for a long time. One thing that will keep you riding your scooter longer is being safe when you are riding. If you are wearing protective gear and fall, most of the time you can get right back up on your scooter and keep riding. If you are not wearing protective gear and fall, most of the time you will get seriously injured and have to stop riding. Scooters come equipped with adjustments and different style boards for all riders that if used correctly can help keep you safe on the scooter. And always remember to take it slow when learning new things on the scooter. Do not try a trick that is way out of your skill level. Work up to the tough tricks by learning the easy tricks first.

It is important to always wear a helmet when riding your scooter. A helmet is the most important protective gear to wear. If you injure your head it could be very serious. It is usually much more serious then if you injure an arm or leg, and wearing a helmet will minimize the injury tremendously. It is also good to wear pads for your knees, elbows and wrists. I think that knee pads are always good to wear, but when you are trying new tricks or something you are not comfortable with you should put on all the pads to ride.

Scooters, like the A series from Razor, come in different sizes for different riders. It is important to ride a scooter that fits you well. You will be more comfortable therefore keeping you safer as you ride. Try the A1 you are a younger rider, and as you get older try riding the A2, A3 and Pro models. All of these scooters also have adjustable handlebars. This is important because the handlebars are a big part of riding the scooter and the safety of the scooter. Make sure the handlebars are set comfortable height for you. This will help keep you safe as well as make the scooter easier to ride, also making tricks easy to learn and do.

When learning new tricks on your scooter it is important to take it slow. Do not go out on your first day and try to bust out a back flip on a ramp. Start with simple tricks and as you get comfortable try tricks that are a little harder. A lot of people get injured on their scooters because they want to bust out some tricks that are beyond their skill level.

So remember to always wear a helmet and pads when riding. Determine the scooter that fits you best and make sure the adjustable handle bars are set correctly for your size. Everything should feel comfortable when riding. Once you feel comfortable and want to learn tricks, remember to take it slow and learn one at a time and do not get to far ahead of yourself. But most importantly have fun.

If the gas tank is not too rusted or dirty, you might be able to get away with just flushing it out. Pour in some fresh gas. But if you are uncertain how old the gas is (even if it smells ok), drain the gas tank, fuel lines, and carb float bowl and refill with fresh gas. I once worked on an Elite 80 with fresh-smelling gas. I could get it to run on starting fluid, but not on gas from the tank. I finally ended up draining all of the old gas and re-filling with fresh gas. The scooter started immediately and run great after that.

Ride very cautiously until you become familiar with the way the scooter handles. Take turns slowly and give yourself extra stopping distance.

Riding your gas scooter or electric scooter with control and safety will require practice. Anyone that will be riding the scooter needs to know the proper way to ride his or her scooter. This will help ensure that you get the most mileage out of your scooter and that you avoid potential accidents by riding incorrectly. You must learn to stand firm on the scooter but relaxed, keeping your weight between the wheels. Don't stand too close to the front or too far back on the scooter. Be sure to shift your weight to the rear when applying brakes, and lean forward when accelerating. Keep feet apart for more stability.

Gently steer the scooter into your turn without any jerky motions. Adjust your balance to keep the scooter upright. Always approach turns very carefully.

Front brakes provide most of your stopping power. Practice at a safe speed until you are comfortable with how they work.

Ride your scooter in a safe place away from other vehicles and in an area which will not disturb other people or animals. Be sure the riding area is a clean and dry surface. Do not ride in high traffic areas.

Scooting can be a useful, safe and fun way to get around town!

Scooter drivers of all ages, just as automobile drivers, have a responsibility to take safety precautions before jumping behind the wheel. For young scooter hobbyist, parents are also responsible for making sure their child driver has a basic knowledge on how to function the motor scooter. Supervisors of scooter riding and the drivers must always know the proper safety equipment to use and use it. Though motor scooters have the ability to serve multiple purposes, they are growing especially fast in popularity among commuters in areas such as college campuses and congested downtown areas.

People traveling to near by neighborhood locations and to short distances for errands are also finding the convenient use of motor scooters for commuting. The advantages driving a scooter can offer are very obvious to some people because of the lifestyles they lead. Probably the favorite perk motor scooters offer commuters is the different ways using one can save money, such as by nearly eliminating gas costs and creating additional free or work time by allowing you to avoid traffic.

Each advantage of driving motor scooters is valuable to many people, especially in large, metropolitan areas, but those who have used this method of commuting have also been met with some resistance. Motorists who routinely travel by scooter know, or should know, the safety laws and regulations in their area but unsafe situations still tend to rise more often than they ought. When driving scooters the most problematic situations occur when automobile drivers do not notice or choose not to recognize scooter drivers as a legitimate vehicle.

Motor scooters are legal vehicles to drive on regular roads and the traffic laws and rules of the road are typically the same as those for other cars and trucks. This being the case, by law, there should not be a situation where a regular sized automobile over takes a motor scooter in a manner they would not use if it were an equal sized automobile. Both of these precautions increase the chances that other vehicles will see you and react properly.

The rear and brake lights on your motor scooter are important features that can also raise the awareness of your presence to other drivers. During day and night the tendency of automobile drivers following behind your scooter is to become distracted from any turns, signals or actions you are taking. Having bright, consistently working brake lights help trailing drivers to notice the move you are making, or plan to make. Some avid scooter drivers have installed a flash lamp that is also activated when the brakes are applied.

The flash lamp continually flashes brightly, each flash only fractions of a second apart to warn following vehicles of the scooter driver�s intent.

Gas powered vehicles machines are complex systems with so many things to look after on the other hand an electric scooter is a very simple machine. A person with little knowledge of electrical circuits can repair it on his own without any need to look for a mechanic. But if knowledge of electrical circuits is not there, many options are available.

If you have an electrical scooter in need of repair the first thing you can do is take it to a standard mechanical workshop and ask for help. Since normal gas powered scooters also have electrical circuits in them, every mechanic will have at least some basic knowledge about circuits.

If they refuse to repair it you can simply ask the manufacturer of the electric scooter regarding any special workshops where such electric vehicles are repaired. Since selling electric scooters is a business for them it is strong possibility that they have special tie-ups with workshops around the country to service their scooters.

Depending upon the kind of repair your scooter may need a week or for minor repairs just a few hours. Sometimes it is just a matter of charging the battery (if you don't charge it regularly) ad it's ready to drive again.

However it is necessary to understand that 'prevention is the best cure'. Regularly use your electric scooter and don't forget to charge it regularly too. If you are way for a few days from your home, you can carry it with you or store in way that it is safe from moisture. Normally it is advisable to look for repair shops before you buy an electric scooter bur since these machines are not complex, they can be repaired easily without much expenses on your part.

Next, you'll have to remove the carburetor and clean it. There are a low of tiny fuel and air passageways in the carb that must be clean it order for your scooter to run right. Carefully take the carb apart. This can be relative easy (on a 50cc scooter) or quite difficult (a Riva 180-200 has limited carb access and 8 separate hoses running to the carb). The carb has tiny passages that get gummed up. The scooter just will not run correctly if the carb is not completely clean, so take your time. I use a gallon container of carb dip (you can get a gallon at your local auto supply store for ~$10).

Mobility Scooter Batteries

Mobility scooters are powered by heavy-duty batteries. Various companies have come up with different kinds of batteries. The prices differ with the varying capacities. Distinct batteries power different models of mobility scooters.

A three-wheel scooter with a 143 lbs capacity is fitted with 2 batteries, 12V, 32 amp that power the vehicle with a maximum speed 4.25mph and cover 25 miles. The same pair of 12V, 32amp power a three-wheeled scooter of 205lbs, with a maximum speed of 5.75 mph and cover 25 miles. The pair can be used for all other models of three wheeled scooters, with different lbs.

A 166lbs full weight four- wheel scooter empowered with a pair of 12V, 32amp battery, runs to a speed of 5.0 mph and cover 25miles. A 355 lbs four- wheel scooter is fitted with a 12V, 100amp battery that enables the scooter to achieve a max speed of 10mph and can cover 25miles, when charged once. A 270lbs, full weight four- wheeled scooter with a capacity of 400lbs, is set with a pair of 12V 40amp battery.

The extra heavy duty scooters with a weight of 280 lbs and maximum capacity of 500lbs are empowered with a pair of 12V, 48 amp batteries, that power the vehicle to a speed of 7.0 mph and covers 25 miles. Whereas scooters with 270 lbs and 309 lbs full weight and a maximum capacity of 500 lbs, run on a pair of 12V 32 amp batteries, that powers both the scooters to attain a speed of 5.7 mph and cover 25 miles and more.

It is advisable to drivers to not pay much for a pair of batteries. They cost an average of $40 a piece. It is essential to make sure that the scooter is charged twice a week, especially in winter.

The EPA has made laws about the kind of emissions even fuel-efficient scooters can produce, and luckily, major scooter producers like China largely heed these standards with commonly sold scooters.

Most scooters need a minimum of 100 psi in compression in order to run start and properly. Compression should be checked when the scooter engine is warm. However, that's hard to do if your scooter is not running. So, just hook up a compression gauge and open up the throttle all the way. Crank the scooter until the needle on the compression gauge stops moving. This should take no more than 5 seconds. Very roughly, 100-125 psi is good, 125-150 psi is very good, and 150+ psi is great. If you don't have this level of compression, then you have bad valves and/or bad piston rings. If you want, you can add a teaspoon or so of oil to the engine through the spark plug hole. Then try the compression test again. If compression is higher, then it's likely you have bad rings. The oil will seal the rings and give you better compression. If compression is the same, then you have bad/misadjusted valves.

Heavy Duty Scooters

Heavy duty electric scooters generally have higher weight capacities than their counterparts. The weight capacities are usually around 400-500lbs for most HD scooters. On top of having higher weight capacities, heavy duty electric scooters also have wider seats and are constructed a little longer to give more leg room.

If you have an electric choke, check it to make sure it works. Check the resistance between the wires - you should see around 10 ohms or less. Measure the length of the choke assembly. Remove the choke from the carb and plug the wires into a 12V source for 15 minutes. The choke body should be warm. Measure the length again - it should increase by around 1/8".

Fuel/Air Mixture. The next thing to check is your fuel/air mixture. You could be getting too much or too little of either. If your scooter has been sitting for a while, it's likely that the gas has evaporated and left a bunch of sludgy deposits. You also restrict the amount of air out of the engine if you don't replace the exhaust pipe with a bigger (or more free flowing) exhaust pipe. In addition, just changing the carb changes the fuel / air ratio inside the engine. Your engine may or may not like the change. For instance, the new carb could give you more top end power, but also lead to starting problems. Or it may run better at low RPM's and poor at high RPM's. Tuning for best performance can be a lot of work!

My Schwinn Stealth 1000 Electric Scooter Saves Money, Is Easy to Use, Cheap & Great For Environment

If you are an adult who wants to save gas money doing local errands and short local trips under 10 miles round-trip, you might want to consider using an electric scooter, a cheap, hassle free , excellent method of transportation that helps the environment too. I use the Schwinn Stealth 1000 Electric Scooter (Schwinn S-1000) which is perfect for me. Licenses are not required in most places for the Schwinn S-1000 (though I would check locally) and about the only thing you really need is a helmet and to weigh under 250 pounds.

I am a total clutz and the S-1000 is incredibly easy to use as the balance is so good and the ride is super comfortable. It took me 1 hour of practice in an empty lot and I've ridden the scooter ever since, easy as pie. Believe it or not, I prefer to ride in the street in the bike lanes where the ground is smooth rather then going over the cracking sidewalks. The scooter goes up to 15 miles per hour and you can go as far as 15 miles with it till the battery is empty, though I think 10 miles is a more reasonable expectation. Charging the battery is super easy as you just use a small charger connected to any electric outlet in your home and connect it to your scooter. Takes about 10 seconds to plug in and about 6 hours to charge. The battery lasts about 6 months, and costs about $125 for a new one and is very easy to put in requiring no mechanical skills.

What I like about the Schwinn Stealth 1000 Electric Scooter is it's cheap, around $400 or so- it will probably cost you $50 for a bike place to put it together, and requires little maintenance primarily because of its direct drive system. I had an earlier Schwinn Electric Scooter with a Cable drive system, and the cables kept getting tangled up and it was costing me $75 a pop to fix. With the Schwinn S-1000, after about 8 months, I've had no repairs or maintenance charges, which I attribute to its direct drive system.

I would recommend you get your local bike shop to put a small basket on the back of the scooter if you do errands because I don't believe Schwinn Electric Scooters still come with baskets. If the gas tank is not too rusted or dirty, you might be able to get away with just flushing it out. Pour in some fresh gas. But if you are uncertain how old the gas is (even if it smells ok), drain the gas tank, fuel lines, and carb float bowl and refill with fresh gas. I once worked on an Elite 80 with fresh-smelling gas. I could get it to run on starting fluid, but not on gas from the tank. I finally ended up draining all of the old gas and re-filling with fresh gas. The scooter started immediately and run great after that.

The most important thing to do is regular oil changes for four stroke engines. Two stroke engines consume their engine oil, so you don't have to worry about changing it. Our scooters only hold about a quart of engine oil. The bigger Yamaha scooters have oil filters, but the Hondas do not have filters (just a small screen). Given the small displacement (engine size) of most scooters, they tend to get run hard. The small amount of oil, lack of oil filter and high rpm usage leads to oil breakdown much quicker than your in automobile. I change my scooter oil every 1000 miles. This may sound extreme, but consider two points: How long does it take you to go 1000 miles? Unless you are riding a 250cc scoot on the highway, it will probably take you a few months. It's not like you need to change it every week. If you are putting on a lot of highway miles, the engine is probably not being stressed with a lot of stop-and-go riding. You also are less likely to run the engine through a lot of hot/cold cycles. In this case you may be able to extend the oil change time. But I wouldn't :>)
